The Cadence engine assesses whether your operating rhythm produces decisions or just produces meetings. A red Cadence engine means reviews happen, the same problems are discussed every quarter, and nothing changes. A green one means the three-layer cadence — weekly pipeline, monthly revenue review, quarterly engine review — consistently produces documented decisions that change what the team does next. Cadence is not meetings. It is the operating heartbeat of the revenue system.
Most companies have meetings. Fewer have a cadence.
The difference is in what the meeting produces. A meeting produces discussion, updates, and a general sense of what is happening. A cadence produces decisions: specific, documented commitments about what will change between now and the next review.
The Cadence engine is the second engine in the Process pillar of the ThriveSide 9 Revenue Engines Framework. It sits between the SOPs engine (which documents what the team does) and the Healthy Accountability engine (which ensures people own what they do). Cadence is the operating rhythm that connects the two: it is the mechanism through which the team reviews what is happening, makes decisions based on that information, and adjusts what they are doing before problems compound.
When the Cadence engine is red, two things are usually true simultaneously. The team is surprised by things that should not be surprises. And the same problems appear in every quarterly review that appeared in the last one.

Dimension 1: Feedback loops. Are problems surfacing before they become crises — or does the team learn about issues when they are already expensive?
A functioning feedback loop means that early-warning signals (pipeline drop, conversion rate shift, customer health decline) are surfaced and reviewed before they manifest as revenue misses. A broken feedback loop means the team learns about problems in the quarterly retrospective, by which point the quarter is already over and the cost is already sunk.
Dimension 2: Adjustment mechanisms. When data says something is wrong, does the team have the structure to diagnose the cause and decide what to change — or does the review produce a discussion that ends without a specific decision?
Most $5M-$20M companies are better at identifying problems than they are at adjusting to them. The review reveals that close rates have dropped. Everyone agrees this is a problem. The meeting ends. The next review reveals that close rates are still dropping. The problem was identified but not adjusted to because there was no structured mechanism for making and implementing the decision.
Dimension 3: Decision speed. How long does it take from identifying a problem to making a decision and beginning implementation?
Decision speed is a competitive advantage. A company that can identify a GTM problem on Monday, decide on a response by Wednesday, and implement by Friday is operating at a different speed than one that identifies the problem in the monthly review, discusses it, tables it for the quarterly meeting, and implements three months later.

The cadence that produces a functioning revenue system is not a single meeting. It is three meetings at three different frequencies, each with a different scope and a different output.
Who attends: Revenue team leads — sales, customer success, anyone who touches active pipeline.
What gets reviewed: Active deals by stage, movement since last week, blockers, and near-term close expectations. Not historical data. Not strategy. What is happening right now, what needs to move, and what is getting in the way.
What the output is: Specific actions. Not "we need to follow up with that prospect" — "David sends the proposal to Acme by Thursday, and the pipeline report is updated by Friday afternoon."
What makes it work: The review is structured (same format every week), brief (30-45 minutes), and ends with a written list of specific actions. The actions are reviewed at the start of next week's meeting. Follow-through is expected and visible.
Red state: The weekly meeting is a status update. Reps report on their deals. The leader listens. The meeting ends. No specific actions are assigned. Blockers are acknowledged but not resolved.
Who attends: Leadership team — founder/CEO, revenue leaders, and anyone accountable for revenue outcomes.
What gets reviewed: Metric trends across the full revenue system. Pipeline volume and velocity. Conversion rates. NRR and customer health. Forecast accuracy versus actual. What changed this month, what it means, and what needs to change next month.
What the output is: Decisions — strategic adjustments based on what the data is showing. These are documented in a decisions log with named owners and completion timelines.
What makes it work: The data is prepared in advance, in a consistent format, so the meeting starts with everyone having reviewed the same numbers. The review focuses on decisions, not on making sure everyone knows the numbers. By the time the meeting starts, the numbers are known. The meeting is for deciding what to do about them.
Red state: The monthly review is a data presentation. Slides are built. Numbers are walked through. Discussion happens. The meeting ends. Nothing was decided. The same numbers are reviewed next month.
Who attends: Full leadership team including the founder. ThriveSide if still engaged.
What gets reviewed: System health across all nine engines. What changed in the last quarter. What the build priorities are for next quarter. Staffing decisions. Macro adjustments to GTM, Offering, and Process.
What the output is: A prioritised build plan for the next quarter. Named owners. Success metrics. The quarterly plan feeds the monthly reviews and the weekly meetings for the next 90 days.
Red state: The quarterly meeting is a planning exercise. Slides are built, priorities are debated, and a list of initiatives is produced. By week three of the new quarter, the initiatives have been displaced by daily urgency and the plan is not being executed.

A decisions log is a simple document — a spreadsheet, a Notion table, a ClickUp list — that records every decision made in a revenue review:
The decisions log serves two purposes. It creates accountability between reviews: the named owner knows their commitment is documented and will be reviewed. It creates institutional memory: the log shows not just what was decided but why, which prevents the same issue from being rediscovered and re-debated in future reviews.
A decisions log from six months of reviews tells you more about how the company actually operates than any strategy document. It shows what the team commits to, what gets done, and what keeps getting deferred.
The Cadence engine does not operate independently. It depends on the Data engine and enables the Accountability engine.
The Data engine dependency: Cadence reviews are only as good as the data they review. A weekly pipeline review based on a CRM nobody trusts produces a meeting about whether the data is right rather than a meeting about what to do next. The Data engine has to produce trustworthy numbers before the Cadence engine can produce trustworthy decisions.
The Accountability engine connection: Cadence produces decisions. Accountability ensures those decisions are implemented. The cadence assigns ownership. The accountability structure ensures that ownership is real — that the named owner is accountable for the commitment before the next review, not just aware of it.
When all three are working together (Data produces trusted information, Cadence produces decisions from that information, Accountability ensures decisions are implemented), the Process pillar is functioning. When any one is broken, the others degrade.

Week 4-6: First full cadence cycle. Run the first complete monthly review and the weekly reviews that feed it. Review the decisions log from the previous weeks to identify what was implemented and what was not. Adjust the cadence format based on what is working.
1. Score your Cadence engine across the three dimensions. Feedback loops: do problems surface before they become crises? Adjustment mechanisms: do reviews produce decisions? Decision speed: how long from identification to implementation? The lowest-scoring dimension is the build priority.
2. Pull your last three monthly review outputs. What decisions were made? How many were implemented before the next review? If you cannot answer these questions because outputs were not documented, your Cadence engine is red.
3. Start the decisions log in the next review. Before the next revenue review, open a simple document. During the review, record every decision made: what was decided, who owns it, when it will be done. Review the log at the start of the next meeting. This single change begins to transform a meeting into a cadence.
